This season we visited medieval Europe via the beautiful illustrations in illuminated manuscripts. The return of the crusaders changed England enormously. They brought back luxuries and ideas not only from Italy but from the Arab world.

When you go back in time you also enter the future. We have superimposed political graphics from Climate Revolution on our collection; fundamental to which is our support for Greenpeace/ for the World to “Save the Arctic”.

Our Anglomania Autumn-Winter 2013/14 collection is inspired by the city it originated from- London. The collection uses historical iconography and prints from the city’s great past and pieces together influences from the Vivienne Westwood archive- from her punk roots- through to her current collections.

Vivid prints and tartans reflect London’s naval past and the cultural diversity and international trade which came from this. Also presented is the classic Tartan Sea Monster print, taken from a dress worn by Queen Elizabeth 1st, which also hints at lands explored during the first British Empire. The focal print within the collection features images of Tower Bridge and barges on the river Thames overlaid with a 15th Century Florentine pomegranate motif.

Bolder checks, barbed wire and portcullis prints are seen in draped jersey and jacquard knits, and give a darker edge to the collection, whilst feminine magnolia prints are used to pay tribute to the historic Covent Garden Flower Market.

To celebrate the London Collections menswear fashion week, Vivienne Westwood previewed the AW2013/14 MAN collection in an installation event hosted with Harrods. Inspired by today’s urban commuter – a post-apocalyptic vision, the installation urged guests to join the Climate Revolution, and featured revolutionary sculptures by Joe Rush, created from recycled metal and found objects

Classical music and couture came together at Sydney Festival’s headlining opera Semele Walk.

Written by Georg Friedrich Händel, the opera is based on the Greek myth of Semele, mother of Dionysus. A story of excess, Semele’s self-destructive nature is relevant to the today’s society in which we are faced with a destruction of our own making – climate change.

The cast were dressed in Vivienne Westwood Couture, referencing the style of Marie

Held at the prestigious Tsunamachi Mitsui-Club, each room featured a unique experience, including Go-Go dancers, a chandelier of umbrellas, a live photo-shoot and a bed dressed with a blanket created from scarves.

Featuring embellished gowns and cocktail dresses reflecting the glamour of the Baroque era, and ball gowns in silk taffetas and boned corsets, each look was presented with fine attention to detail, theatrical embroidery, sparkling sequins and luscious silks.

A selection of eveningwear and suiting from the AW12 Man Label collection was also presented, featuring check and tartan suits with asymmetric cuts paired with shiny oxford brogues to create the quintessential  ‘British gentleman’.

Guest models included Wyman Wong, Kam Kwok-Leung and Han Huo Huo, with YoonA of Girls Generation as guest of honour.

Vivienne Westwood’s new Gainsborough Collection of palladium fine jewellery was recently launched on the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week’s Gold Label show. In attendence was the new face of the collection, Georgia May Jagger, who has been photographed by Juergen Teller for the campaign.
The collection was celebrated after the Gold Label show with an intimate dinner at Restaurant 1728.

We began with influences which seem to be quite arbitrary but nevertheless through the process of applying them you evolve a vision, a projection. We are always designing for a parallel universe because we are making something different, a bit new. (All designers do this). It’s a world where people look good – interesting people who lead a better life.

We started…A kind person sent us a little book on beatles “for inspiration”. Coloured markings and patches, iridescence, wing cases and wings, hard articulated bits, antennae. We interpreted the patches as holes filled with ruched self-fabric which puffed up but pulled and stretched and because these patches didn’t fit very well they left little corners and lumps sticking up around where they were inserted. These insect cuts talk about human bodies. Then – because we had visited the Prado – there is the influence of costume in Velasquez; slashed clothes had evolved into great bands describing large silhouettes.

Also for a print I took and coloured and elaborated the drawn pattern which was covering a box of Chinese tea. This print is somehow global – exotic; it could be Indian, Asian, Russian, African (I was reading “Sinbad the sailor” at the time). I took advantage as always of my squiggle print which is also a universal – exotic print – printed on our clompers (my name for our recent platforms) looks tribal. I wanted a tribal feeling (always exciting) but also an alien feeling – for this I said to hair and make-up I want hairstyles of different tribes and make-up which is all the same – almost nothing done, but strange.

I think the greatest single influence on art and the way we see the world happened at the beginning of the 20th Century and carried on and ramified throughout. I mean the Ballet Russes and Diaghilev its creator. Romantic, fairytale, folk, myth interpreted through the eyes of modernity. Influenced: all the musicians, Matisse, Picasso, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, you and Andreas and me.

Really the only connection with the collection and the Climate Revolution is the title but I want to remind you that it has begun, that we must all act fast, that our first line of attack is the economists who still insist on keeping separate the mutual cause of climate change. Their ignorance is driving into economic and environmental misery. Economists must face the truth and join the Climate Revolution.

In 2008, the New Economics Foundation announced their “100 Months” campaign – the amount of time they estimate we have to stabilize the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere before the risk of uncontrollable planet warming becomes unacceptably high.

We are now halfway through, with 50 more months to go – therefore we have to do it by the next Olympics. We have a choice: Hell or a Future better than the human race has ever known.

CLIMATE REVOLUTION

The Revolution is already begun.

The fact of man- made climate change is accepted by most people. Through every walk of life people are changing their values and their behaviour, this seems to be happening in the US, despite its being politically backward. This continues to build the Revolution. The fight is no longer between the classes or between rich and poor but between the idiots and the eco-conscious.

We need a formal inauguration of the Revolution and a plan of operation.

Resist Economic Propaganda

Our economic system, run for profit and waste and based primarily on the extractive industries, is the cause of climate change. We have wasted the earth’s treasure and we can no longer exploit it cheaply. This shows up as a symptom; the symptom which is the proof of climate change is the financial crisis.

Economists treat economics as if it is a pure science divorced from the facts of life. The result of this false accountancy is a willful confusion under cover of which industry wreaks its havoc scot-free and ignores the human and environmental cost. The old, blind, mechanistic and life threatening view of economists prevents a true analysis. If they included climate change in their analysis we could work towards a better future. If we want a sound economy we have to have a sound environment- stop climate change.

Plan of operation

1) Affirm the connection between climate change and the financial crisis.
2) Implement two measures without which we cannot stop climate change:

i. Establish the Artic Commons

ii. Save the Rainforest
Both of these are possible right now.

3) Tackle the need for clean energy. The quickest safe option is nuclear. The problem is that the public is against it. We think this is because of false propaganda from the press who have massively misrepresented the facts to satisfy the thrill of a good scare story. (You can still be part of the Revolution even if you don’t agree – it’s just that time is running out and we need to decide.)
4) Curb the Corporations, especially the extractive industries and agribusiness. (We notice a recently coined word, “Corporocracy”.)  We shall now form a cabinet of operations so that we can rally the troops who are already forming.

How to join the Revolution

Many people have changed their way of living. The more this happens, the greater the Revolution, the greater the chance of saving our planet.

1) Money is a means to an end, not an end in itself. “I never waste money I spend it”- Oscar Wilde. Maybe you’ll give a donation to an NGO or charity. You can give your support in other ways. Just by following one you will learn a lot, this is support.
2) Quality v Quantity
3) Buy less, choose well, make it last (we don’t want the “latest thing” just for the sake of it.)
4) Prepare and cook your own food.
5) Cut out plastic.
6) Inform yourselves.
7) Consider the responsibility of not having or having children. Chances of survival will be clear by next Olympics.
Take an active part in events of the Revolution as it starts to build.
9) Engage in art and culture.

10) Your own idea.
