Royal Mail is showcasing some of Britain’s world famous fashion designers and their iconic designs on ten new stamps to highlight exactly why Britain is at the forefront of world fashion design.

Featured alongside other British Fashion Royalty, such as McQueen and Paul Smith, the Harlequin Dress was photographed by renowned fashion photographer, Sølve Sundsbø.

On sale May 15th.

Vivienne Westwood’s Ethical Fashion Africa collection has officially been nominated for London Design Museum’s, Design of the Year Award.

Now in its third season of production, the collections have helped to create work for women living in some of the most poverty stricken areas of Kenya – along with teaching them lifelong skills for a sustainable income.

The British Council’s Alison Moloney has said of the collaboration, ‘This project shows it is possible to provide wealth to poor communities through business. It promotes sustainable and fair trade practice, yet does not compromise Westwood’s iconic design aesthetic.’

Red Label Autumn- Winter 2012/ 13

Over the years Red Label has collected ideas from history and from all over the world, but whatever we do we always end with a collection that is British, the world looked at through our eyes. This of course applies to all designers, they interpret according to their national perspective. Anyway, perhaps there is no city more cosmopolitan than London, so here we are with our British collection which shows an interest in everything. Tailoring, masculine- Savile Row inspired long Edwardian jackets (velvet trimmed), clean white shirts and Jermyn Street stripes, feminine tailoring- checks + tartans, lots of wool, mohair, blankets + capes, prints + jacquards taken from African body painting, Ikat, mottled effect prints that remind you of feathers and fur but also somehow of old ladies in Provence.

For our evening looks paper taffeta and duchess in checks, stripes and block colours are used for wrapped and twisted dresses. More formal ‘portrait’ suits and cocktail dresses are shown alongside traditional ‘smoking’ suits in satin finish wool and glitter stretch.

This show is in support of the Environmental Justice Foundation’s (EJF) ‘No Place Like Home’ campaign for climate refugees. The t-shirts I designed, seen in the show, support the campaign to raise awareness of the plight of people who have been forced from their homes and land due to the increasing and intensifying impact of climate change. This can happen through violent calamity, but also and often people are forced into a decision to move because their land is no longer habitable. EJF believes that climate change is one of the most profound threats to people’s rights to life, food, health, water and shelter. Unlike the 10 million refugees recognized by the UN Refugee Agency, these people currently have no legal status or protection. EJF is calling for urgent international action to provide them with legal recognition, assistance and protection.

‘London’
Autumn/Winter 2012/13

Looking back to the heroes of the past they looked so incredible in their clothes- artists, intellectuals, scientists: cultivated people. Imagine them live and in front of you- you would think you were on another planet. I want people to shine with human dignity and nobility. I rely on historical reference. By engaging with human genius I have tried to capture the past in my fashion.

But we can never repeat, we are swept along by the changing times and our own experience. When we try to imitate we find ourselves doing something new. I see fashion as a proposal, a way for people to look more wonderful.

This collection has taken care of itself. Without direction Andreas and I began choosing fabrics and delegating technical tasks from random ideas until something began to form. Half-way through, theatre director, Philip Green asked us if we could do costumes for a future production of a 17^th century play, ‘The Man of Mode’ and at that point we realized the collection was looking rather 17^th century. We said ‘yes’ to the play and from there on the 17^th century became a conscious frame of reference. Sometimes it is more a question of mood e.g a black coat made out of a rectangle folded into an envelope has a feeling of a scholars’ gown; it somehow could represent the scientific interest of the age.

The 17^th century was a century of great change and drama, it was the age of the amateur and of the rugged individualist and adventurer; in this century the British forged its national identity, not only politically but commercially. Britons scattered themselves all over the world as settlers, traders and seekers of liberty of worship. Men all over the world were extending their boundaries and this feeling of space and spaciousness was extended into the cosmos by the telescope and the microscope. Charles II laughed at the scientists of the newly- formed Royal Society for ‘weighing air’ but indeed they were investigating atmospheric pressure and it was a short step to the pressure of steam.

The old £50 note with of course the Queen on the front and the great London architect Christopher Wren on the back seems to sum up the identity of London pretty well, thanks to Britain’s geographical position as an island at the global nexus between east and west and London’s resulting importance as a port and bank. London has had historically an extreme proportion of the National population which today is highly cosmopolitan. I decided to call the collection ‘London’. I knew Andreas would like it, because to him it would be clear and simple and he loves London.

Leaving the 17^th century businessmen in their coffee houses and returning to – our collection-

I love the mix of cuts, a structured corset as a historical reference, rectangles – tailored, or draped, simple cuts – like children’s drawings; fabrics presented with love of perfect finish to the extent of leaving raw edges, theatrical embroidered beading and washed garments.

Women are always on stage when they care about the clothes they wear. Make-up and hair is inspired by the romantic heroines of Rubens. Nobody painted flesh like him, live and fluid, soft and shining as a baby. Her eyes are always turned to heaven.

We would like to ask, ‘can London switch off the lights that are left on all night in empty buildings and therefore help to stop climate change, especially by conveying the message that we must change our habits to save our planet?

Our collection is in support of David Attenborough’s documentary series ‘The Frozen Planet’, which will go to America but unfortunately without the final episode where he explains that we humans are responsible for the ice melt. So we took the polar explorers as our heroes and we love polar bears. Barack Obama never mentions the words climate change.

If our leaders would admit the fact of climate change and conduct their politics from that perspective then we might have a chance – we have 10 years at the most to stop it.

How impossible it is for us to imagine ourselves victims of disaster. We suffer for the poor people who were thrown into the sea from their cruise ship off the coast of Tuscany, some losing their lives. Imagine a world of accelerating natural disasters, one after the other so that nobody can help anyone else.

Public opinion is the only thing that will save us.

GreenUp! Europe Campaign

I was approached by the United Nation Environmental Programme to design a t-shirt for their GreenUp! campaign – when you start doing things you find people come to you. They’re starting with a terrific idea which is to plant corridors of trees to link Europe’s forests. This new initiative is about triggering new habits for a greener Europe and for greener economies. I have created a design for UNEP in support of the project. It’s a really practical idea and it raises public awareness – it’s great for the environment, great for people, great for animals.

My design has been printed on a t-shirt provided by sustainable manufacturers, ANVIL. The ‘Tree-shirts’ will be sold exclusively through YOOX.com on a worldwide level and in our Milan shop during menswear fashion week with all proceeds to be donated to the GreenUp! fund, helping to re-plant trees in Europe’s worst affected regions.

Following the success of the exhibition in Shanghai, next stop on the Vivienne Westwood Shoes tour is Omotesando Hills in Tokyo, Japan. The largest collection on show to date, the exhibition showcases over 200 designs, tracing the exceptional success of Vivienne Westwood’s 40 year career.

On show until early January 2012, the exhibition revisits early inspirations of Vivienne Westwood collections including the punk-influenced Seditionary boot, a salute to fetishism with the Mary Jane’s of Erotic Zones and the Super Elevated Gillie famous for Naomi’s catwalk tumble.

Vivienne Westwood in Shanghai

Vivienne Westwood recently celebrated the official opening of her first flagship store in Shanghai. The opening event at Grand Gateway tied in with the opening of Vivienne Westwood Shoes: An Exhibition.
Rounding off a full week of events, Vivienne Westwood was the special guest of Shanghai Fashion Week, hosting a show featuring pieces from all labels – Gold, Red, Anglomania and MAN.

THE COLLECTION has 3 main influences : China, because I hope their traditional wisdom and experience from a culture going back to Confucius may help us to save the planet; the desert because of climate change; and 17^th century corsets.
When I was in Nairobi I met Mr. Xijia Wang who is working there with the United Nations. Our conversation left me with the wish to sum up my ideas. The result is the World Family Tree which you will see printed on Tshirts and bags. Mr. Wang wrote my name and the words “Green economy” in his calligraphy and I incorporated this in a print taken from Chinese flower painting.
There is a blow-up oversize jacket called the Mao jacket and I have always loved the Mao cap, though I hate violent revolution. Perhaps our love of uniforms comes from a wish to look alike, be part of a group – and maybe a group not happy with the status quo.
The desert inspired me to look at the Berbers with their burnous and the Tuaregs with their layers and their sunlight blue. There is a lot of black, indigo and copper fabric plus whites. Dresses are long.

Something I always do is mix up historical dress with ethnic clothes and new shapes or it could be a torn scrap of dress worn with court shoes and a chic handbag.

For some time I wanted to do oversize historical corsets. I thought I could give them a feeling of armour, worn as a jacket they would look touph – like a soldier or biker. The corsets we chose to oversize are from the England of Charles II; those beauties who, in their portraits dressed themselves in the sheets and satin covers pulled from the bed.

MUSIC Sixteen year old Kyle Nash-Baker will perform his own piano composition for tonight’s show!
“The music I will play consists of selected excerpts from a range of my own compositions rearranged with sound effects to represent the World Family Tree, one branch good and the other frightening. I agree with Vivienne that art rests as the center of human existence. The path she maps on the tree, regarding the union of Gaia and Science demonstrates our better chance to navigate the problems that humanity is building for itself”.

Most of you know that I’ve always used my fashion shows as a platform for my belief in the importance of social justice and the urgent need to fight climate change. Tonight I introduce the Rainforest charity, Cool Earth, and a campaign that is very close to my heart- a plan to save the most vulnerable Rainforest areas by 2020.

We must begin today- tomorrow is too late. Governments have been talking about saving the Rainforest for 40 years. Now, only half of it is left. Since launching in 2007, Cool Earth has worked with indigenous Rainforest people to protect 2.5 million acres in the Western Amazon and block the advance of illegal logging- the first stage in most Rainforest destruction. We plan to extend this effective community-lead model along the most critical arcs of deforestation in the Amazon, the Congo Basin and Borneo- the groundwork has already been laid. We need your help to continue.

I am personally supporting Cool Earth and investing in our future. Tonight marks the start of our fundraising campaign for Cool Earth- we will have the official launch in November. I’m inviting my friends, celebrities and everyone interested in saving our beautiful world to join me. Think about getting involved.
